Small Hydro Power Plant Palaiochori
Location: Kranea, Grevena
Power: 2,6 MW
Technology: Hydroelectric
The SHPP Palaiochori utilizes a net head of 221 meters, achieved over a distance of approximately 3.5 kilometers along the stream bed, between elevations of 1,211 meters and 979 meters, through a penstock with a total length of 4,300 meters. All project components — including the powerhouse, intake structure, and penstock — are located to the north of the settlement of Kranea, in the Grevena region.
The SHPP Palaiochori has a maximum usable flow of 1.4 m³/s, corresponding to a maximum electrical output of 2.6 MW from the turbine–generator–transformer system. The expected annual energy production is approximately 8 GWh.
The electromechanical equipment of the powerhouse is installed within a building of about 120 m² and includes a vertical-axis Pelton turbine with six nozzles, a 3,150 kVA synchronous generator, a 3,150 kVA transformer, an electrohydraulic governor, automation systems, and low- and medium-voltage switchboards.
The intake structure consists of a small overflow weir, 4.5 meters in height. The penstock, with a total length of 4,300 meters, is constructed from GRP in three equal sections, with diameters of 1,000 mm, 900 mm, and 800 mm, respectively. The entire pipeline is installed underground, almost entirely following an existing forest road.
